How to format a write-protected USB drive

Universal Serial Bus revolutionized the communication between computer systems. It is a channel by which an ordinary user can transfer their data from one place to another without an internet connection. Although USB Drive has very limited storage capacity, still it is the most used peripheral to transfer data.

If your USB drive, which is commonly known as pen drive, flash drive etc. is protected by write –protected mode, then you are no able to write or perform any kind of modification in it. You can only see the content it holds. It is still possible to format a protected pen drive with various means i.e.registry editor or with the help of command prompt or using utilities. Here is the process of the formatting USB drive with the help of registry editor option.
How to format write- protected USB drive with registry editor in PC?
  • Open Start menu of the window. You can find it on the extreme left corner of your window screen.
  • Go the Run option. It will open a new pop-up window on your screen.
  • Type “Regedit.exe” in the search box. It remains in every PC with window OS.
  • It promotes you to a blue coloured window.
  • Open the program by clicking it twice in a row. It will forward you to the registry editor window.
  • Move to “Computer \ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \”
  • It prompts a new screen, now move to “CurrentControlSet \ Control \ StorageDevicePolicies “
  • In case, it does not contain “CurrentControlSet \ Control \ StorageDevicePolicies” folder. Create a new key by right-clicking anywhere on the registry editor page.
  • Give a name to the newly created key. Now open the folder. Now you need to right-click on any location of the registry editor.
  • Go to “new” option and choose “DWORD” and move forward.
  • Go to Data then move to “WriteProtect” option. Now right click on it.
  • Open value Data option and then change the value of 0 to 1. Now move to “OK” and click to proceed.
  • Now, reboot your system after closing the Registry Editor screen.
  • Connect your USB drive with your computer system.
  • Click on window explore to open and open pen drive by double-clicking on it.
  • Go to “format” option and choose your mode and preferences of formatting the USB drive which is on the left-hand corner of the window.
  • Go to “start” menu and your pen drive is now free from every protection.
  • Now you can write and read in it and transfer data from one device to another device.
